Concrete Slab Repair

by Wallace Prescott

There are many reasons that individuals choose concrete when pouring a driveway or a sidewalk. Concrete is an incredibly durable material and is used in almost every area of construction. If put down correctly concrete can last for many years. The problem is that sometimes the foundation that the concrete is poured on can actually star to settle. When this happens the concrete does not have any support underneath and you may notice that there are cracks that start to form. Here are three different things that you can do when you start to notice your concrete is starting to crack.

Instant Cement

If you do not think that the problem is from underneath the the concrete you can go to your local home improvement store and buy some instant cement. The cement that you buy should be the finish cement that is made with a sand aggregate. You do not want pebble aggregate because the pebbles will be to large to fit into the smaller cracks. Mix the concrete and be sure that you use a concrete vibrator to get all the air bubbles out. Once you have mixed the concrete fit as much of the concrete into the crack as possible.

Slab Jacking

If the problem is the foundation under your concrete slab, you need to give the foundation a little bit of help. The best way to do this is to rent a slab jack. This is a machine that will pump the concrete and sand under the slab with such force that it will bolster up the concrete slab and start to fill the cracks. The slab jack is one of the very best ways to fix a concrete slab that is starting to crack due to settling.

Rip It Out

The very last option that you have is to rip out the slab and pour a completely new slab. This is going to be the most expensive rout that you can take, but it is also is going to be the only way that you can ensure that the foundation is completely tamped down. So, when you rip up the concrete slap you will want to take the time to completely tamp down the foundation very well. You will then want to hire a concrete contractor to pour your new slab to perfection. If the concrete is poured down correctly you should not have any more problems for years.
